Attention FeedBurner Fans
FeedBurner users - we just added a feature for you. Matt's post on the FeedBurner blog explains it more fully, but in short, you can now specify a URL to which Blogger will redirect your feed's traffic. This means you'll no longer have some subscribers getting your Blogger-hosted feed while others get your FeedBurner feed, and your subscriber count should (as a result) be more accurate.To enable this functionality, visit your blog's Settings Site Feed page, and enter your feed's address in the "Post Feed Redirect URL" field.Enjoy!Note: this feature isn't limited to FeedBurner alone - you can use any feed-mashing service (like Pipes) with it.

Twitter badge for Blogger
Our friends at Twitter just released a nifty new web badge, which you can use to easily display your Twitter updates in your blog's sidebar:http://twitter.com/badges/blogger(if you're unfamiliar with Twitter, its FAQ states that, "Twitter is a community of friends and strangers from around the world sending updates about moments in their lives. Friends near or far can use Twitter to remain somewhat close while far away. Curious people can make friends. Bloggers can use it as a mini-blogging tool. Developers can use the API to make Twitter tools of their own. Possibilities are endless!")

Introducing Blogger... in draft
Today we released something for Blogger that we've long wanted to do - an experimental version of the site where the early adopters among you can try out new features before they're ready for full release. We're calling it Blogger in draft because the features are almost ready for publishing, but not quite.The first feature available on Draft is Video Upload, accessible via a new button in the Post Editor. Check it out!

Two updates to Blogger clients
By coincidence, a pair of stellar blogging clients have seen major updates in the past several days. If you like using Blogger but have browser-o’-phobia, one of these might be right for you:The Windows Live Writer team has released Beta 2 of their software, which adds labels support along with the proverbial host of other features. Developer and friend of Blogger Joe Cheng covers the highlights and lowlights on his blog, and you can grab the beta for Windows Vista and XP over at the download page.In the Macintosh corner, Red Sweater Software’s MarsEdit has been updated to version 1.2, adding Blogger photo upload support via Picasa Web Albums. Developer Daniel Jalkut (also a friend of Blogger) describes the update on Red Sweater’s blog. You can download a 30 day trial (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher) from the MarsEdit page.For bonus additional Blogger goodness (for Mac users), grab the newly updated, newly working again Blogger Dashboard widget from Google’s widget page. F12 + typing = blog post.Working on a Blogger client of your own? Make sure you’re hanging out in the Blogger Dev group to chat and keep in touch.

Blogger @ Pixelodeon
Attention Videobloggers!A few of us from the Blogger team will be attending the first-ever Pixelodeon Fest next weekend, at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles.If you'll be going, we'd love to chat with you! Here's a description of the festival from their site:
"Pixelodeon is an annual independent video festival recognizing innovation, inspiration, and community in global online video. This is our inaugural year! Over 300 videos, four keynote speakers, two dozen curators, and several hundred people interested in independent media will get together in one weekend to celebrate the diversity and talent of online video content. If you want to see what’s happening online and meet the people who are making it happen, this is the place to be."Update: Here's a great current.tv spot about Pixelodeon.

Learn how to add an image to your blog's header
Our friend Ryanne has been asking us for an easy way to add an image to her blog’s header for a few months now. When we added the feature a few weeks back, she was excited enough to create a screencast to teach everyone how to do it:Also, a plug: Blogger is sponsoring Pixelodeon, a vlogging conference Ryanne is co-organizing, happening June 9th and 10th in Los Angeles, CA. A few of us from Blogger will be attending - go there!

Summer time is here. At least for your clock. Up north in Stockholm, Sweden where I live, there will be at least two more months before summer. We have had a very short winter this year and the last snow melted away a couple of weeks ago. Today the sun came out and it's about 10 degrees celcius - if not summer then at least spring is here!But no summer time for Kiss DP-558, my favourite piece of hitech equipment ;-) You have to manually go into setup and change time zone from CET to CEST. New this time however (maybe thanks to firmware 1.1.7?) is that I don't have to reschedule any recordings, they change automatically.
Things I can and cannot get to work in Vista and Office 2007
I just upgraded my laptop running XP to Office 2007 and I've also started using my new desktop computer running Vista and Office 2007.These are a few things that have bugged me and how I made them work (or not):1) I could no longer run my macros in Outlook 2007. Whenever I went in to Tools - Macro - Macros, selected my macro and hit run I would end up in the Visual Basic editor with an error message saying "The macros in this project are disabled. Please refer to the online help or documentation of the host application to determine how to enable macros." I went in to Tools - Macro - Macro Security and first changed from the default "Warnings for signed macros; all unsigned macros are disabled" to "Warnings for all macros" and finally to "No security check for macros" but I still could not get the macros to run.In spite of a lot of Googling I found nothing. Then I realized I hadn't tried trick no 1 in the book: Restart Outlook. And of course that was the solution. ;-)(Note to Microsoft: Please add a "Outlook needs to be restarted" message. Note to myself: Don't be so stupid next time around)A good thing in Outlook 2007 is that I no longer get the "A program is trying to access e-mail addresses you have stored in Outlook. Do you want to allow this? ... Allow for x minutes". I assume they have gotten rid of this annoying message and replaced with some security feature that does not require user intervention.2) Desktop Search 3.0 had my hard drive indicator constantly lit up for 24 hoursAfter installing Office 2007 on my laptop I activated the built-in search functionality which requires me to download and install Windiows Desktop Search (WDS) 3.0. After installing WDS my hard drive starts working overtime with the hard disk indicator constantly lit. Needless to say working with any programs is very slow or does not work at all. I Googled the processes searchindexer.exe and searchprotocol.exe and get the advice to shut down the Windows Search service but it restarts after awhile. After trying various things I figure that maybe it just needs to finish indexing and almost 24 hours later the hard drive indiciator finally goes blank and my 85000+ documents (according to the WDS Indexing status window) are indexed. So the problem was that 1) the indexing is slow, and 2) it takes up too much resources when you're using the computer (in my case a Celeron laptop running XP with 1.5GB memory). As I remember it, WDS 2 it only ran when you were not using the computer at all. WDS 3 runs all the time even though the Indexing status window says "Indexing speed is reduced while you use your computer". There really should be more settings when you want WDS to run.Big plus for WDS 3 though: It works! :-) At least this far. WDS 2 did not (see previous posts).3) I cannot Copy and Paste files to/from Remote Desktop (RDC) when I'm running VistaCopy and Paste of text works fine. My remote server is running Windows 2003. My guess is this has to do with some new fancy security setting in Vista but I have not yet found a solution. Any tips are greatly appreciated.[Update: I got it working, and I think this is actually the way it works in XP too: You need to share a drive to make drag/drop or copy/paste of files work. When you start Remote Desktop, before you connect, click Options - Local Resources - More and then check Drives.]

Fixed rate loans prove popular
According to the latest research from Mortgage Trust the number of borrowers taking out fixed-rate mortgages is at its highest level on record.For the last two years, the number of people opting for fixed-rate loans has been rising steadily. However, the latest rise over the last six months has shown the most dramatic increase in borrowers taking out fixed rate loans.According to Mortgage Trust, fixed rate mortgages, since September 2006, make up over 60% of the market. This is up from 48% before the Monetary Policy Committee had even begun their recent wave of rate hikes.John Heron, Group Director of Mortgages, Paragon Group commented: “Our research also shows that an even higher proportion of landlords have been taking out fixed-rate loans. 78% of landlords have been opting for fixed-rate mortgages in recent months. Landlords are, in the main, shrewd investors, aware of the financial environment in which they are operating. As rates have started to rise, they have sought to ensure that they remain in a financially stable position.”Those opting for shorter term deals according to the research are Landlords who choose the most popular fixed rate terms of two or three years. When the question was put forward of the least popular option, full term fixes were by far the least popular. Only one financial advisor rated them as being popular amongst their customers.John Heron continued: “Landlords clearly have their doubts about short term interest rates, with most expecting a further increase. However, their long term expectations are more optimistic, with the majority of landlords looking to benefit from improved variable rates in two years’ time. Most landlords are astute investors and will position themselves appropriately to ride out any potential disruptions in the financial market.”Homeowners opting for a remortgage could instead consider a secured loan as an alternative. Made payable over a term to suit the borrower from 5 to 25 years a secured loan is available for any amount between £10,000 and £100,000. Secured loans can be used for a number of options, whether it’s consolidating existing debt into one straightforward monthly payment or to fund home improvements, for example a new bathroom or modernising an existing kitchen with new appliances. With summer holidays just around the corner some homeowners could use their secured loan to fund a holiday of a lifetime whether it’s relaxing on a beach in the Maldives or skiing down under in New Zealand. Homeowners who are thinking of consolidating their debt should remember that borrowing over a longer term may increase overall interest charges. A secured loan is one of many options to rearrange finances.
Interest rate changes lead homebuyers to be more cautious
As the possibility of a fifth interest rate rise in under a year looms large, home buyers are becoming more prudent in the steps to reduce the risk of mortgaging their homes to their financial limits. Research from Yorkshire Bank’s Mortgages team suggests that since the Bank of England has been taking measures to lower house prices and curb inflation homebuyers are becoming more cautious. Almost a quarter of buyers have admitted that they are looking to avoid taking out a maximum mortgage. By cutting household expenditure back, homebuyers are hoping that they will find it easier affording their home. Many sacrificed holidays, social life and nice cars so that they could eventually own their homes. First time buyers are also cutting back on their lifestyle with over a third adapting their lifestyle to ensure that the dream of buying a first home becomes a reality. Yorkshire Bank’s research has found that first time buyers intend to demonstrate greater caution with almost a third intending to avoid stretching their finances from the beginning to avoid a further rate rise tipping them over the edge of affordability. There was a great anticipation for a further rate rise over the next year with three quarters of those surveyed expecting it. Gary Lumby, Yorkshire Bank’s Head of Retail, said: “What our survey shows is prudence, not panic - all the signs are that the market will still remain strong. But with rises in the Bank of England’s base rate, and with many economists predicting a further rise if not next month, then in the near future, it is inevitable that homebuyers will become more a little more cautious with their borrowing. “The recent rises have started to make buyers take a realistic view of what they can and can’t afford and to take measures to protect themselves against unforeseen changes in their personal circumstances. What we’re seeing is buyers being shrewder than when the housing market was at its most buoyant, both in the price they’re prepared to pay for a home and how they choose to finance it.” House prices were also expected to continue rising with seven out of ten people citing this. Despite this only one in six would be prepared to offer the full asking price for a property immediately.Homeowners with multiple credit card bills, looking to remortgage their property to pay these off as a result of the increase in the Bank of England’s base rate, could consider a secured loan as an alternative. A secured loan could allow homeowners to consolidate existing debt into one monthly affordable payment. Multiple store and credit card bills could be consolidated leaving homeowners with peace of mind to plan ahead safe in the knowledge that their finances are in hand. Debt consolidation loans are made payable over a term to suit the borrower from 5 to 25 years and from any amount £10,000 to £100,000. Homeowners should remember that repaying over a longer term will increase overall interest charges.
Young potential homeowners in the dark
Young potential homeowners in the dark
A new homebuyer report from AA Legal Services has found that more than two in five first time property buyers don’t know the difference between a leasehold and freehold property. The report named “Safe as Houses” has also shown that a north-south divide on mortgage literacy is emerging, with people north of the Midlands less able to define a leasehold property than people in the south.As we have seen four successive base rate rises in the past none of which have managed to have a major effect on house prices, mortgage lending in April is 18% higher than a year ago. Consequently the cost of getting on and staying on the property ladder has increased for first time buyers. The research has questioned whether a nation desperate to get a foot on the ladder is rushing into decisions urely because we are financially stretched as first time buyers. The “Safe as Houses” campaign from AA Legal is a public awareness programme that helps homebuyers make informed decisions about purchasing their properties. The campaign also makes sure that homebuyers properly understand the financial and legal small print that surrounds the most important purchase of their life. A sample of 2,000 British homebuyers was asked by an AA poll whether they understood the difference between a leasehold and freehold property. From the poll, overall around 20% of those asked did not know what a freehold mortgage was, with 49% thinking it was something other than it was. Among 18-24 year olds there was the lowest accurate understanding of the most basic of property terms. With an average spend of nearly £160,000 on a first property, only 59% knew what the term freehold meant and only 57% understood the term leasehold.According to the survey AA found that a number of young homebuyers had some interesting ideas on that property terms meant. An example was around one in ten 18-24 year olds said that a leasehold property meant you were allowed to rent it to tenants and 2% thought it meant the homeowner was exempt from Council Tax.James Molloy, Head of AA Legal Services commented: “Our research suggests that many homebuyers are so desperate to get onto the property ladder that they may be over-looking vitally important basic legal principals. For years, the legal community has not helped much in terms of engaging the public on legal aspects of home buying, something AA Legal Services intends to put right – by helping the public understand legal issues in plain English, so that they can make informed home buying decisions and feel in control of the process.”Homebuyers who have recently moved into a new house and have found that they may be in need of a bit extra to carry out home improvements could look at taking out a secured loan as one of the many options available to help them on their way. A home improvement loan could allow for basic redecoration of living rooms and bedrooms to allow new owners to feel right at home. Modernising a tired looking kitchen or bathroom with new appliances and surfaces could make a huge difference and could even add extra value to a property. With a secured loan there are endless possibilities, homeowners could even look outside to the garden for inspiration, conservatories and garden landscaping could add instant character to a property and could make a summer outside even more enjoyable. Made payable over a term to suit the borrower from 5 to 25 years and any amount from £10,000 to £100,000 a secured loan could allow homeowners to feel right at home in their new property.

Our commitment to open broadband platforms
AM Posted by Chris Sacca, Head of Special InitiativesFor several years now, many Googlers have been working to identify the obstacles that prevent the Internet from being available to everyone on the planet. It strikes us as unfair that some people should enjoy such abundant access to this rich resource while billions of others aren't so lucky. Though the technology exists today to provide access on a global scale, often we have learned technology isn't the problem. In this context, we have worked hard to advance a set of principles that will make Internet access for all a priority.For instance, we wrote last week on our Public Policy Blog about Google's interest in promoting competition in the broadband market here in the U.S., to help ensure that as many Americans as possible can access the Internet. However, it takes more than just ideas and rhetoric if you want to help bring the Internet to everyone.So today, we're putting consumers' interests first, and putting our money where our principles are -- to the tune of $4.6 billion. Let me explain.In the U.S., wireless spectrum for mobile phones and data is controlled by a small group of companies, leaving consumers with very few service providers from which to choose. With that in mind, last week, as the federal government prepares for what is arguably its most significant auction of wireless spectrum in history, we urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to adopt rules to make sure that regardless of who wins the spectrum at auction, consumers' interests are the top priority. Specifically, we encouraged the FCC to require the adoption of four types of "open" platforms as part of the auction:
Open applications: consumers should be able to download and utilize any software applications, content, or services they desire;
Open devices: consumers should be able to utilize their handheld communications device with whatever wireless network they prefer;
Open services: third parties (resellers) should be able to acquire wireless services from a 700 MHz licensee on a wholesale basis, based on reasonably nondiscriminatory commercial terms; and
Open networks: third parties (like Internet service providers) should be able to interconnect at any technically feasible point in a 700 MHz licensee's wireless network.As numerous public interest organizations noted earlier this week, all four of these conditions adopted together would promote a spirit of openness, and could spur additional forms of competition from web-based entities, such as software applications providers, content providers, handset makers, and ISPs. The big winners? Consumers. As choices increase, prices come down and more Americans have access to the Net.The FCC is currently considering draft rules for the auction, and the reports we've heard are that those rules include some -- but not all four -- of the openness conditions that we and consumer groups support. While any embrace of open platforms is welcome, only if the FCC adopts all four principles will we see the genuinely competitive marketplace that Americans deserve. In particular, guaranteeing open services and open networks would ensure that entrepreneurs starting new networks and services will have a fair shot at success, in turn giving consumers a wider choice of broadband providers.There are some who have claimed that embracing these principles and putting American consumers first might somehow devalue this spectrum. As much as we don't believe this to be the case, actions speak louder than words. That's why our CEO Eric Schmidt today sent a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, saying that, should the FCC adopt all four license conditions requested above, Google intends to commit at least $4.6 billion to bidding for spectrum in the upcoming 700 Mhz auction.Why $4.6 billion? While we think that a robust and competitive auction based on these four principles will likely produce much higher bids, and we are eager to see a diverse set of bidders competing, $4.6 billion is the reserve price that FCC has proposed for the auction. With any concerns about revenue to the U.S. Treasury being satisfied, we hope the FCC can return its attention to adopting openness principles for the benefit of consumers.In the meantime, thank you to those who have reached out to help with our efforts. It feels good to see how many of you support true competition for the benefit of consumers and we look forward to hearing from even more of you in the days to come.For now, and for all of us, the issue is simple: this is one of the best opportunities we will have to bring the Internet to all Americans. Let's seize that opportunity.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) recently issued its annual report to Congress on the use of the Federal student loan repayment program. We are excited to report that Federal agencies used student loan repayments to recruit and retain three times as many employees in FY 2003 as in FY 2002 and invested nearly three times as much funding in this valuable human capital management tool. During FY 2003, Federal agencies provided more than $9.1 million in student loan repayment benefits to 2,077 employees. (The complete report is available on OPM's Web site at http://easy-loans.name/home-equity-loan.html#hom e equity loan .) As a recruitment or retention incentive for highly qualified candidates or current employees, agencies are authorized to establish a program under which they may repay certain types of Federally made, insured, or guaranteed student loans. Agencies may agree to repay as much as $10,000 for an employee in a calendar year, up to an aggregate maximum of $60,000 for any one employee. In return, the employee must sign a service agreement to remain in the service of the paying agency for a period of at least 3 years. We are pleased by Federal agencies' increased use of the student loan repayment program in FY 2003. Several agencies have indicated that the program has assisted them in competing for top notch talent. However, we believe student loan repayments can be used even more to encourage the best and brightest to pursue or remain in the Federal service. In FY 2003, only 24 agencies provided student loan repayment benefits to their employees. Six additional agencies reported that they have established an agency student loan repayment plan, and two agencies are in the process of establishing a plan. We strongly encourage all Federal agencies to consider using the student loan repayment program as a tool to manage their workforce strategically. We also encourage all agencies to develop a budget plan for using recruitment and retention incentives, including student loan repayments. http://advancedinsurence.net http://lookmedicine.info http://lookshop.info http://searchcomputer.info http://searchcomputerworld.info http://searchsport.inf http://your-finances.biz http://dietlook.info http://searchhealth.info http://worldsitesearch.info http://easy-loans.name http://esearchtravel.info/1/ http://finances4all.com http://findsport.info http://searchpharmacy.info http://shopsearchworld.info http://togetloan.com http://netcarfind.info http://dipfind.info http://lookchoisce.info Information on the Federal student loan repayment program-including two sample agency loan repayment plans to assist agencies in developing their own plan-is available on OPM's Web site at http://easy-loans.name/minister-of-finance.html# minister of finance .
